To commemorate September 12, 2001, Greater Houston Area communities are participating each year in

Good Deed Day

Join us on September 12, 2007

Whether as an individual or an organization, the Sam Houston Council, Boy Scouts of America and Houston leaders encourage citizens to do a good deed for someone else on that day.

As C.S. Lewis wrote in The Chronicles of Narnia: "If you do one good deed your reward usually is to be set to do another and harder and better one." After the success of 2006, we're looking forward to making Good Deed Day in 2007 even better.

Six cities in the Houston area proclaimed September 12 Good Deed Day, as did county commissioners of Grimes and Wharton counties.

Above, Mayor David Wallace of Sugar Land, Texas, signed a proclamation on August 22, 2006, declaring September 12th "Good Deed Day" in the city of Sugar Land.

Mayor J. Turner and the City Council of Huntsville found time in their council meeting on September 5 to recognize Good Deed Day and present a proclamation to Huntsville Troop 114 . “(We) need to promote compassion and caring through good deeds of youth and citizens,” Turner said. “I am encouraging all people and local entities to participate.”

Below, Mayor Bill White proclaimed September 12 Good Deed Day for the City of Houston.

Below, Mayor Wentrcek of Bryan presented his Proclamation to Pack 327.

Mayors of Conroe and Navasota also signed proclamations for Good Deed Days.

The Navasota Examiner carried a news item that Mayor Bert Miller is reminding Navasota residents of the city's involvement in “Good Deed Day”, Tuesday, September 12, and is asking that everyone join in the observance by performing a good deed. To make the event official, Mayor Miller signed a proclamation at Monday's regular Council meeting.

Good Deeds in the Works

Brill Elementary School in Spring, TX, dedicated the week to Good Deed Day. Starting on Monday, September 11, students saw examples of Good Deeds on green circles decorating the hallways, and teachers shared stories of Good Deeds with their students. Good Deeds were acknowledged with stickers. On Tuesday, September 12 students were given a green string to wear on their wrist to remind them of Good Deed Day. During the week the school collected Gatorade for the local Fire Station. On Sept. 15th, at 1:30 pm, two fire trucks will visit the school to pick up the Gatorade.

Hamilton Middle School, Troop 626 of the Windwood Presbyterian Church and Troop 35 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Cy-Fair joined together to collect donations of food and money which they delivered to the Mission of Yahweh on Good Deed Day. The Scouts spent the evening at the mission with the children reading to them.

Sam Houston Council Pack 1324 will conduct a Trinkets for Toys program in which scouts will make bracelets to sell at Wal-Mart (Hwy. 249 and Spring Cypress) on October 1 and 7. Their goal is to raise $600 to buy Christmas toys for the homeless children from Star of Hope Mission.

Fay School Cub Scout Pack 450 will collect
Dog Chew Toys of all sizes September 12-15 to donate to the Houston’s Bureau of Animal Regulation & Care.

Pack 327 Webelo 1 and 2 dens at the Sam Houston School in Bryan presented Mayor Ernie Wentrcek's Proclamation to their school and then took their teachers to lunch to show their appreciation. They'll also clean the playground, do landcaping, and take the American and Texan flags to be dry cleaned.

Pack 883 in The Woodlands will collect school supplies for Kipp Transformation School in Crosstimbers.

Pack 1453 fixed the fence around the playground and pick up trash at Mission Bend United Methodist Church. Each volunteered to do his own good deed: working in the school library, mowing an older neighbor’s yard for free, cleaning out parents’ closets. All will all be wearing green ribbons.

Pack 311 in Sugar Land, through a non-profit organization called Warriors For God, helps feed some of Houston’s homeless on the first Sunday of every month. Founders Steve and Michelle Kobrin and their two sons, Quinn and Xander, help prepare meals, bag lunches, load cars, set up, serve food, hand out drinks and clean up.

Pack 1615 in Mission Bend donated approx. 20 cases of Gatorade and water to the firefighters and EMTs that comprise the Community Volunteer Fire Dept at 16003 Bellaire Blvd. The Scouts will be presenting their donation on Good Deed Day at the Community Volunteer Fire Dept 16003 Bellaire Blvd at 6 p.m. Contact Carol Ithier at cjithier@yahoo.com.

"I plan to help with the METRO activity at the Denver Harbor location. I also plan to help anyone I see that needs help and at home I will say please and thank you a lot.

I think it is a good idea to have a special day to remember 9-11-01 because it is a good idea to remind other people to be nice to others.

I was at Pre-K when the two planes crashed into the Twin Towers. I was only 4 years old at the time and did not know the buildings were not in Texas. I am learning more about the incident that day. It makes me sad because of all the good and innocent people that died that day."
