Boy
Scouts Will Help Patrons at METRO Transit
Centers, Park & Rides on Good Deed Day
Houston,
TX, September 11, 2006 – The Sam Houston
Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, today
announced the successful kickoff of Good
Deed Day on September 12 across the Greater
Houston Area. The Council founded Good Deed
Day this year to commemorate September 12th,
2001, when the United States saw an outpouring
of kindness and compassion from across the
world following the attacks of September
11.
Mayors
Bill White of the City of Houston, David
Wallace of Sugar Land, James Turner of Huntsville,
Bert Miller of Navasota, Tommy Metcalfe
of Conroe and Ernie Wentrcek of Bryan have
issued proclamations declaring September
12th as Good Deed Day and encouraging their
citizens to do at least one "good deed"
for someone else.
METRO
is joining the Council to recognize this
important event. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on
September 12, local scouts will team up
with METRO police officers to help patrons
and alert them to a new non-emergency, toll-free
number -- #MPD (673) on a cell phone --
that METRO is offering in cooperation with
Sprint Nextel, Verizon Wireless, Cingular
Wireless and T-Mobile. Scouts will be at
these locations:
Downtown
Houston Transit Center – at the
block of Main, Pierce, Travis and St. Joseph
Parkway.
Texas
Medical Center Transit Center -
at Fannin and Pressler.
Hillcroft
Transit Center-- on Westpark, just
west of US 59 S.
Townsen
Park & Ride - 21003 Eastex
Freeway (U.S. 59 North).
Denver Harbor -1510 Lockwood
Drive, south of Farmer Street and north
of the I-10 East Freeway service road.
“We are very grateful to the City of Houston,
to METRO, and to the mayors of cities across
the Greater Houston Area for endorsing Good
Deed Day,” said Bill Lucas, president
and scout executive of the Sam Houston Area
Council. “We are strongest when we
rise above our challenges, no matter how difficult
they may be, and help each other. Good Deed
Day reminds us of what is great about America.”
“METRO
and the Boy Scouts share a similar motto
‘Be Prepared,’” said METRO Police
Chief Thomas Lambert. “We want
our customers to be alert and be prepared
and if they see something, they should call
our new MPD number. We appreciate the support
we’re receiving from the Boy Scouts, who
are doing a ‘good deed’ in helping us get
this information out to our riders. We also
appreciate the partnership with our service
providers, Sprint/Nextel, Verizon Wireless,
Cingular Wireless and T-Mobile.”
Scout
troops across Greater Houston are finding
other ways to be of service on Good Deed
Day, including raising money to buy Christmas
toys for homeless children, collecting donations
of food and money for a local mission, collecting
toys for animals, and helping to organize
school activities that raise awareness about
Good Deed Day and recognize good deeds.
